Finest Coastal Weather
The Guanacaste coast has many small microclimates. They are determined by the exposure to the hot NE dry season trade winds. Guanacaste's northern ‘gold coast’ has 50 miles of development starting about 25 miles north of the house. That area is directly exposed to the hot winds. No mountains block the winds from turning that area brown in the dry season. Unlike that gold coast region, the Rio Rosario basin is protected from the NE winds by 3250' Vista Al Mar Peak that sits about 10 miles upwind from the house. It is a massive standalone mountain that causes the winds to rise and cool, with spill-over cloud effects that result in rain on its western slopes, often at a time when it rains nowhere else. That's why the Rio Rosario typically flows year round.
The Rio Rosario basin gets about 90” of rain a year with comfortable temperatures. Its average annual temperatures range 80-84 degrees F, so air conditioning is typically not necessary. This means you get to hear the sounds of nature instead of the sounds of motors, blowers and man. In May, the trade winds turn back north, and the air currents bring rains in from off the Pacific. The climate in the Rio Rosario basin is wonderful in both the green and dry seasons. Residents enjoy six months of pure summer (Dec.-May) and six months of pleasant green season (with lots of sun) on this part of the Nicoya peninsula.
The river basin below the house has many primary forest trees, some 100’ tall and 15’ in diameter. The basin is a unique ecosystem that's obvious in the dry season. It remains green when all the surrounding areas turn brown. The wonderful weather microclimate is only several miles wide along the coast. When you're in it you feel it, you also see it by all the green. Best of all, you see and hear it by all the monkeys and birds. From February to May the Rio Rosario basin is the greenest coastal nature refuge on the entire coast..
